Here we are ... all the way from the southwest tip of Indiana; just right across the mighty Ohio River from Kentucky. I still wake up some days and think, "Did we really quit our jobs and move to Arizona?" I guess that means we are living a dream. At least I hope so. Read more |

I was born in Illinois in 1959. When I was 5, my parents made the decision to relocate to California, where I was raised and lived until 2003. Growing up we lived in Southern California where a kid had all they could ask for, great beaches and Disneyland. I moved to Northern California the week that I turned 21. I was independent and ready to live life. By this time I had been working in the mortgage industry for several years and began building my career, which spanned 30 years.

Jean Gauthier
|
Hi, my name is Jean Gauthier and I began working at The Oasis as an animal caretaker in November 2008. I am from the Pacific Northwest and have never lived in the Southwestern United States before. I have been a parrot owner and enthusiast since I adopted my Meyer’s Parrot named Molly in the spring of 2003. About 6 months before, while taking an ornithology course at the University of Washington, I read the book “The Parrot Who Owns Me” by Joanna Burger for entertainment. Though I had been interested in wild birds all my life, I had not been exceptionally interested in companion parrots until after reading ornithologist Burger’s story of her life with a male Red Lored Amazon named Tiko.

I’ve lived in Arizona most of my life, but I’m relatively new to Cascabel. I love the seclusion of this community, and was very excited to hear that there was a position open as a caregiver at the Oasis Sanctuary. I have been around and worked with animals quite a bit, but they were mainly horses, cattle, and dogs - so this is an exciting learning opportunity for me. I really enjoy learning about and from all the birds which live here at the Oasis, and I am continually impressed by the extremely dedicated people involved in keeping the Oasis operating smoothly, caretakers and supporters both.

While my start in animal care came a bit late in life, it has truly been rewarding and soul changing… and having the opportunity to join the team at the Oasis seems like a perfect step for me.

I have always kept busy. I am happiest when creating and this time of my life is, without a doubt, the busiest and most creative I have ever been... |

My life in a nutshell. I grew up in Safford, a small town (7,000 residents) in southeastern Arizona less than two hours from where The Oasis Sanctuary is now located. I left Safford right after high school to attend college and I worked for a law firm during the summers. I loved the work (and the accompanying paychecks) so I quit college after three years to become a full-time legal secretary.

I was born and raised in New York City and currently live in Woodbury, on Long Island, New York. I earned a Bachelors Degree in Social Work from Syracuse University in 1970. Upon leaving college that year, I took a job with the Social Security Administration where I worked until 1990, first as a Claims Auditor, then as part of the training staff, and for the last ten years was a unit Manager. In 1990, I resigned from Social Security to work full-time with my husband Neal in his Engineering Firm managing the staff and maintaining the books. |
