On the Birdfront
Who will get the nut?
Many of you know the work of photographer Jerry Buley. Over the years Jerry has spent many hours taking pictures of Oasis birds. He has graciously donated his time and his art to support the sanctuary. You have seen his work in our annual calendar and his art has been presented as auction pieces for our twice yearly silent auction. As a caregiver to Shanti, a female African Grey, Jerry recognizes an opportunity to capture a special moment when photographing the birds.
On a recent visit to The Oasis, Jerry captured the following series of pictures between Paco, a Lilac-crowned Amazon, and Sampson, a Congo African Grey. Paco and Sampson live in the African Grey Aviary.
These pictures were taken on a day that treats were fed. With shared feeding bowls the nut treats create a frenzy of activity by the birds in an attempt to snatch their preferred nuts.
Sampson is much bigger than Paco. But, Paco does not back down. Which one do you think will win?
Sampson talks and Paco listens.
Both Sampson and Paco are talking at the same time.
Paco continues to talk while Sampson listens.
Paco gets in the face of the bigger Sampson.
Paco threatens Sampson, both with wings out.
Sampson blinks, and Paco continues the attack.
All Photos by Jerry Buley.
Another bit of information... at Discover The Oasis 2010 this aviary was rededicated as the Alex Memorial African Grey Aviary, dedicated to the memory of Alex ~ forever.
